Paignton Harbour

Working fishing boats bob alongside pleasure craft in this proper Devon harbour that's managed to keep its authentic character despite the tourist hordes. The red cliffs form a dramatic backdrop while fishermen mend nets and unload their catch - it's the real deal, not some sanitised marina.

Families love watching the boats come and go, especially when the crab boats return in late afternoon. Kids can spot seals from the harbour wall if they're patient, and there's usually an ice cream van nearby when patience runs thin. The small beach gets packed in summer but it's lovely for a paddle.

Walkers will appreciate this as a starting point for the coastal path towards Torquay, though be warned the initial stretch is quite steep. Photography enthusiasts get cracking shots at sunset when the light hits those red sandstone cliffs just right.

It's free to wander around and you could easily spend an hour here, longer if you fancy a drink at one of the harbour-side pubs. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to visit when the light is softer and the crowds thinner.

Paignton Harbour makes a pleasant change from the beach-focused holiday parks nearby like Hoburne Devon Bay and Waterside Holiday Park. It's walkable from most accommodation in the area and gives you that proper seaside town feel that some of the larger parks can lack.
