Oystershell Hill

The name alone is enough to make you curious - Oystershell Hill sits in Bracknell Forest with the kind of geography that makes you wonder what on earth is happening up here. It's a modest peak by any standard, more of a decent rise than a dramatic summit, but that's rather the point. This is southern England hiking, not Alpine drama.

The walk itself takes you through proper woodland, with patches of open ground that let you breathe. On a clear day you get decent views across the Forest, which is genuinely pleasant if not exactly heart-stopping. The terrain is manageable - firm underfoot most of the time, though it can get squelchy after rain. Allow a good hour for the ascent and a proper look around, maybe longer if you're not moving quickly.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the initial climb - there's not much to do once you're up there beyond looking and turning round again. History types will be disappointed: there's no dramatic backstory, no ruins, no reason the Normans cared about it. It's simply a hill in a forest.

If you're based at one of the Chertsey caravan parks - and there are several dotted within five miles - this works as a decent half-morning outing. Not a reason to plan a trip around, but absolutely worth the twenty-minute drive if you're in the area and need to stretch your legs. Free, obviously. Go when the weather's decent; there's no shelter up top.
