Oxclose

Finding this cave requires a proper trek through the Derbyshire countryside - it's not signposted and certainly not developed for tourists. Oxclose sits tucked away in the limestone landscape near Matlock, accessible only to those willing to scramble across rough terrain and navigate by OS map.

Serious cavers and geology enthusiasts will appreciate the challenge. The entrance is narrow and the interior cramped - definitely not one for families with young children or anyone uncomfortable in confined spaces. You'll need a proper torch, sturdy boots, and ideally some caving experience.

Unlike the show caves scattered around the Peak District, this remains entirely wild. No pathways, no lighting, no admission fees. That's the appeal for some, but it also means real risks if you're not properly prepared.

Honestly, unless you're already into caving or geological features, the effort required probably outweighs what you'll get from the experience. Most visitors staying at nearby parks like Darwin Forest or Hoe Grange Holidays would be better served exploring the more accessible caves in the area. The walk to reach Oxclose is scenic enough, mind you - classic Peak District limestone country with proper views back towards Matlock. Just don't expect underground wonders to match the effort of getting there.
