Overseal Reservoir

The water sits perfectly still on most days, fringed by woodland that drops straight down to the shore. Overseal Reservoir is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for - a proper working water body near Swadlincote that's become a decent spot for a walk and a breather if you're camping nearby.

It's a fishing lake primarily, so don't expect a lido atmosphere. What you get instead is a quiet circuit walk around the water's edge, good for clearing your head after a few days in a caravan. The woodland keeps things sheltered even when the wind's up, and on a decent afternoon the reflections are genuinely worth a photo or two. Families with young kids will manage the walk fine, though there's not much in the way of facilities - no café, no play area, no shops. Bring a packed lunch if you're making a morning of it.

If you're staying at Conkers Camping just up the road, it's practically on your doorstep - less than a mile away, so useful for burning off restless energy before dinner. The walk takes about 40 minutes to an hour depending on how many stops you make for looking about. Free to access, no charge for parking that I could see.

It works best as a supporting attraction rather than a main event - somewhere to slot into a morning before heading to better-known spots. Worth the detour if you're in the area, but I wouldn't travel specially.
