CONKERS

Conkers is a woodland visitor attraction just outside Swadlincote, built around a disused coalmine that's been transformed into something genuinely unexpected. You get underground tours into the old pit workings, which genuinely feel substantial - not a theme park ride, but an actual descent into industrial heritage. Above ground there's woodland trails, a treetop walk if you're after views, and enough to occupy families for a solid half-day without feeling rushed.

History buffs will find the coal mining story properly interesting. The galleries explain what life was actually like down there, and the scale of the operation becomes clear once you're surrounded by the old infrastructure. Kids tend to enjoy the underground bit more than you'd expect - there's something about going proper deep that captivates them. It's not exhausting though, so younger ones won't hit a wall halfway through.

The woodland setting matters. This isn't a bleak industrial site - trees have grown back, the landscape has softened, and you can walk between attractions without feeling like you're at a museum. If you're camping at Conkers Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, this is an obvious morning activity before heading out. The glamping options at Broadleaves or Fire & Stars are close enough for an evening visit if you time it right.

Check opening hours before you go - they vary seasonally. Admission usually requires payment, but it's reasonable value if you're making a proper morning of it. The walk around the site is manageable for most fitness levels, though some sections have uneven ground.
