Overs Wood

Walking through Overs Wood feels like stepping into the proper Shropshire countryside - dense woodland that actually makes you feel removed from the world rather than just pretending to. It's a working forest rather than some manicured nature reserve, which means you get the real thing: tall trees, uneven ground, and paths that occasionally disappear into themselves.

The wood sits just outside Bishops Castle, making it an easy bolt-on to a park-based holiday in the area. If you're staying at one of the nearby spots like Green Caravan Park or Mountain Edge, it's close enough for a morning ramble without needing to load up the car. Walkers will get the most from it - the terrain is proper woodland walking rather than a stroll - and anyone after a bit of peace from the campsite will find it here. Kids won't get bored if they're the adventurous type, but it's not a playground.

There's no obvious visitor infrastructure, which is either a selling point or a drawback depending on your outlook. Free access, free walking, no gift shop nonsense. Allow an hour or so for a decent loop, though you can obviously do as much or as little as the mood takes. Winter's actually quite good - the bare trees let you see further, and the ground firms up enough that you won't sink.

It won't blow your mind, but that's the point. It's honest woodland in honest countryside, the kind of place that reminds you why you bothered leaving the caravan in the first place.
