Over Sale

A steep climb up rough fell from the Kentmere Valley rewards you with unobstructed views across the Lake District - if you've got the legs for it. Over Sale sits at 760 metres and isn't for anyone after a gentle stroll. The ascent is relentless, especially in wet conditions when the path turns to bog, but once you crest the ridge the views open right up. You'll see across to the Pennines on clear days and down into Kendal below. The summit itself is fairly bare - no café, no facilities, just you and the fell. Allow a good three hours round trip from the valley floor, longer if you're not used to this sort of terrain.

Walkers heading from Kendal will get the most from this one. It's not a casual family afternoon - the steep gradient and unmade path mean proper boots and reasonable fitness are essential. Children over ten who regularly walk hills might manage it, but there's no easing them in here. The fell can be soggy even days after rain, so the right footwear makes all the difference.
