Over Denton Church is a small, rural parish church that rewards the effort with genuine solitude and views that stretch across proper Northumberland moorland. The building itself is modest - stone-built, straightforward - but it's the setting that makes it worth your time. You're standing at a considerable height, with the valley floor falling away below and the hills rolling on for miles.

It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers and anyone chasing quiet moments rather than crowds. If you're after ticking off architectural highlights or medieval treasures, you'll be mildly disappointed - this is a working village church, not a cathedral. But if you want to sit on a bench overlooking the Pennines with barely another soul in sight, then it's rather lovely. The walk from the nearest car park isn't arduous, though the lane gets narrow and the gradient is a touch steep for what amounts to 15 minutes on foot.

Based near Haltwhistle, you're in excellent walking country. Combine it with Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site or the more upmarket Herding Hill Farm - both put you within easy reach of the Hadrian's Wall Path and the broader South Tyne Valley trails. Allow an hour including the walk and a look around. Go midweek in autumn when the light's golden and the moor is properly atmospheric.
