Over Bridge

The Over Bridge carries the A40 across the River Severn just north of Gloucester, and it's one of those structures you might drive over without giving it a second thought - until you actually stop and look at it properly. Built in 1830, this cast iron arch bridge is genuinely impressive engineering for its time, a proper Victorian achievement that still feels robust and purposeful today.

The best view is from the towpath below, where you can appreciate the elegant sweep of the ironwork and see how it's held together. It's not a destination in itself - you're talking ten minutes maximum to have a proper look - but if you're exploring the Severn Valley or heading towards the Forest of Dean, it's worth a small detour to clock the craftsmanship. History enthusiasts will get more from it than most; kids might find the river views more interesting than the bridge itself.

Parking is limited but you can usually find a spot on the approach road. The walk down to the towpath is straightforward, though it can be muddy after rain. If you're staying at Apple Orchard Camping & Caravan Site nearby, it's barely worth the drive just for this, but combine it with a riverside walk and you've got a solid hour's activity. Free to view, obviously. Go when the light's decent - overcast days flatten the ironwork, whereas late afternoon gives you proper shadows across the structure.
