Walk into Outmoor Wood near Taunton and you're straight into proper Somerset woodland - the kind with dark soil underfoot, moss creeping up ancient oaks, and that distinctive smell of damp earth and decomposing leaves. It's not vast, which is actually refreshing. You can do a decent circuit in under an hour without feeling rushed, or potter about for longer if you've brought a book and a thermos. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though muddy after rain - wear sensible boots. This is straightforward forest, nothing fancy. No café, no visitor centre, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. Just trees, space, and quiet. Families with young children will find it manageable enough for a morning outing, though there's nothing to entertain them once the novelty of the woodland wears off. Serious walkers heading out from Taunton will appreciate it as a decent warm-up walk or a stop-off between longer routes. The wood sits well within reach of the holiday parks clustered around Doniford Bay and Blue Anchor - both under three miles away - making it a decent escape when the parks feel a bit too structured. If you're staying at Butlins in Minehead, it's worth the short drive over. Don't expect drama or Instagram moments. Expect to breathe properly for half an hour and forget about your phone. That's the entire point.
