Outerwards Reservoir

The water at Outerwards Reservoir sits flat and still most days, ringed by the kind of quiet that makes you actually notice it. Located inland from Dunoon, this isn't a destination that's going to blow your mind with dramatic vistas, but it's a proper spot if you're after somewhere to stretch your legs without the crowds you'd find at the more famous lochs nearby.

It's a straightforward walk around the water, good for families who don't need everything to be a production. You can park up and do anywhere from a gentle circuit to a longer ramble depending on mood and energy levels. The water's dark and peaty - very Scottish highlands - and on a decent day the reflections are worth a photograph or two. Birdwatchers do alright here. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting anything interesting.

This works best as a half-day add-on to a broader Argyll itinerary. If you're staying at Beach House Pods just down the road, it's an easy morning jaunt before heading elsewhere. Don't expect facilities - there's nothing on-site, so sort yourself out in Dunoon first. Admission appears free, though I'd verify opening if there are any gates. Spring and autumn suit it best; midwinter can be a bit bleak, and high summer brings midges. Allow two to three hours maximum for a comfortable walk. Decent spot for a leg-stretch between bigger attractions, but not a reason to plan a trip around.
