The Outer Banks near Colchester is where the River Colne opens into the North Sea, and it's a properly exposed, wind-battered stretch of Essex coastline that won't appeal to everyone but absolutely rewards those who make the trip. This isn't a seaside town with deckchairs and ice cream vans. It's tidal mudflats, salt marshes, and shingle banks where you're more likely to spot a curlew than another person.

Birdwatchers come here religiously. The shallow waters and protected marshes attract waders, wildfowl, and the occasional rarity that gets twitchers driving from miles away. In autumn especially, the migration activity is extraordinary. You'll need binoculars and patience - lots of it.

For walkers, the banks offer a different kind of Essex beauty than you'd expect. The paths can be boggy and the weather unforgiving, so proper kit matters. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit. Photographers and nature types will find endless material, though it's bleak rather than chocolate-box pretty.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and snacks. Free to explore whenever you want. It works brilliantly as a half-day excursion if you're basing yourself at Eastland Meadows Country Park just down the road - close enough for a morning visit before heading back to the park for lunch. Not for the impatient or those wanting manicured walks, but for anyone who likes their nature raw, it's genuinely special.
