The lakes around Ellesmere are a proper draw if you're after walking, birdwatching, or just sitting with your thermos watching the water. This is genuine countryside - wet fields, reed beds, the sort of place where you'll see herons if you're patient enough. The nature reserve itself is free to access, though you'll want to allow at least a couple of hours if you're doing the full circuit.

Walkers get the most from it. There are decent trails threading around the water, nothing too demanding, but substantial enough that you feel like you've been somewhere by the end. Birdwatchers will be here at dawn or dusk when the light's right and the place quietens down. Families with younger kids might find it a bit flat after half an hour unless they're genuinely into spotting birds or skipping stones.

The real advantage is how close it sits to the holiday parks - Archers' Meadow and Colemere Caravan Park are barely a mile away. You could stay at any of them and walk to the reserve without needing the car. That's worth factoring in. The landscape won't stop you dead like the Wrekin does from a distance, but it's peaceful in a way that actually works after a few days. Spring brings the migrants, summer's good for just loitering, and winter has its own appeal when the light's thin and the water mirrors everything grey.
