Ellesmere

Walking the perimeter takes a couple of hours at an easy pace, and it's the kind of route where you can stop whenever you fancy without feeling like you've wasted the trip.

It's family-friendly territory. Kids will enjoy spotting waterfowl - there's plenty of birdlife around the margins - and the walks aren't demanding enough to spark complaints halfway round. History buffs get something from it too; the mere's been here since the last ice age, and the town itself has medieval roots, though it's the landscape rather than specific monuments that'll hold your attention.

Free to wander, no entrance fees or time restrictions. Go on a quieter weekday if you want peace; weekends pull in local families and dog walkers. The loop walk is best in spring or early autumn when the light's forgiving and you're not melting.
