Our Lady Star of the Sea, Bridlington

The seafront at Bridlington reveals this Victorian Catholic church in all its Gothic glory - all pointed arches, soaring stonework and that distinctive star motif that gives it its name. Our Lady Star of the Sea sits just back from the promenade, impossible to miss with its tower climbing above the terraced houses. Inside, it's a proper working parish church with the kind of peaceful atmosphere you get when a building's been doing its job for over 150 years.

It's worth a 20-minute wander if you're already down at Bridlington's seafront - which you will be if you're staying at South Shore Holiday Park just across the way, or any of the other caravan sites dotted along this stretch of coast. History types will appreciate the Victorian architecture and the role it played in the local Irish Catholic community. Families won't find it a long attraction, but it breaks up a day of beach time nicely, especially if the weather turns slightly dodgy.

There's no entry charge, obviously - it's a working church - and you can pop in during daylight hours. The real draw is the exterior and its setting against the Yorkshire coast backdrop. Bridlington itself offers the sort of bucket-and-spade appeal that keeps visitors coming back: the harbour, the sea walls, fish and chips that actually taste of fish. The church fits neatly into a morning's exploration before heading to Haven Thornwick Bay or one of the other parks further up the coast if you're planning a broader holiday.
