Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

The interior stops you dead the moment you walk in. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic church in Whitstable, and it's one of those places where the architecture does all the talking - all soaring space and light, with the kind of calm that makes you want to sit down for twenty minutes whether you're religious or not.

It's Victorian, built when Whitstable was already becoming a proper seaside town, and the craftsmanship shows. The stained glass catches the afternoon sun in a way that feels almost deliberate, like someone planned it to make you pause. The altar is genuinely impressive without being showy about it.

Who'll get the most from it? Anyone with an interest in Victorian architecture, really, and anyone who finds themselves in Whitstable and wants five minutes of genuine quiet away from the seafront bustle. It's not a major draw on its own - you won't spend hours here - but if you're staying at Seaview Holiday Park just down the road, it's absolutely worth the walk into town to have a look.

Better still, combine it with a wander round Whitstable itself. The harbour, the independent shops, the seafood restaurants - the church slots in nicely as a cultural pause between all that. Nethergong Camping is slightly further out if you're after something more low-key, but the church remains an easy enough visit from either base.

Free to enter, as most churches are. Go when Whitstable's not heaving - early morning or mid-week is your best bet.
