The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception sits quietly in Whitstable, a working Catholic place of worship that most visitors to this seaside town walk straight past. It's a solid Victorian-era build - nothing flashy from the outside, but step through the doors and you'll find yourself in a proper calm space with decent stained glass and that particular smell of old wood and incense that gets you thinking about why you're actually there.

This isn't a tourist attraction in the conventional sense. You're visiting an active church, not a museum. That said, if you've got an interest in 19th-century Catholic architecture or you're after twenty minutes of genuine peace away from the beach crowds, it does the job well. The interior is well-maintained and there's enough detail in the fixtures to warrant a slow wander round. Photography policies vary at working churches, so check before you pull out your phone.

Whitstable itself is the real draw - fish and chips, excellent oysters, and a proper seaside feel without the tackiness. If you're staying at Central Beach Holiday Park over in Latimer, it's close enough for a casual afternoon poke around town. Allow half an hour maximum here, then head down to the seafront or grab lunch at one of the waterfront spots. The church works best as a quiet interlude rather than a destination in itself, but Whitstable rewards the effort either way.
