Our Lady of Lourdes

Catholic pilgrims might recognise the name, but this modest stone church near Tyn-y-Gongl bears little resemblance to its famous French namesake. Built in the early 20th century to serve the local farming community, it's a simple affair with whitewashed walls and a small bell tower that catches the light beautifully on clear days.

The interior holds perhaps thirty people at a squeeze, with plain wooden pews and surprisingly good Victorian stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Mary. What strikes you most is the silence - step inside and the sounds of the A5025 fade completely.

Families staying at nearby parks like Golden Sunset Holidays or Bodafon Caravan Park might find it worth a brief stop, particularly if travelling with grandparents who appreciate traditional architecture. The churchyard offers pleasant views across to the Menai Strait on a good day, though it's hardly a destination in itself.

Allow twenty minutes unless you're genuinely interested in early 20th-century church design. The building appears to be open during daylight hours, though I'd recommend checking locally if you're making a special trip. It works well as a quiet moment during a drive around eastern Anglesey, but don't expect anything grand. Sometimes the most unremarkable places offer the most peace.
