Ottery St Mary Parish Church

The church at Ottery St Mary stops you dead when you first see it. That's not hyperbole - the sheer verticality of the tower, the intricate stonework, the sense that you've stumbled into something genuinely important, catches you off guard even if you've read about it beforehand.

This is a proper medieval parish church, one of Devon's finest, and it's worth the detour from West Hill. The whole place feels less like a museum and more like somewhere people still actually use, which somehow makes it better.
