Ossian's Cave

The walk to Ossian's Cave is frankly better than the cave itself, though that's not really a complaint. You're climbing up through proper Highland scenery above Ballachulish, with the loch opening out below and Ben Nevis looming in the distance. Takes about forty minutes to reach it depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

Once you get there, it's a modest natural cave with some carvings allegedly linked to the Ossian legends - though honestly, the rock art is worn enough that you'll be squinting and nodding along with whatever the locals reckon they depict. The real draw is the spot itself: standing at the cave mouth, you've got views that make the scramble worthwhile. On a clear day it's genuinely striking.

Families with older kids will do fine here, but younger ones might find the climb tedious and the actual cave underwhelming. Walkers and local history types will get more from it, especially if you're interested in Scottish Gaelic folklore. The whole outing, door to door from Ballachulish, is about two to three hours.

If you're based at Red Squirrel Campsite or Invercoe, this fits nicely into a morning's expedition before heading elsewhere. It's free, naturally - it's a cave on a hillside. Just go early if the weather's decent, because that walk's no fun in the rain and the views vanish completely.
