Osier Lake

The water at Osier Lake sits glass-flat most mornings, reflecting the Cambridgeshire sky in a way that makes you understand why people drive out here from Peterborough just to stand and look. It's a modest stretch of water - nothing vast, nothing dramatic - but that's rather the point. You get proper peace, the kind where you actually notice birdsong.

This is fishing territory, mainly. Anglers line the banks with practised patience, and the lake's stocked enough to make their visits worthwhile. Non-fishing visitors come for the walk round the perimeter, which takes a leisurely hour or so. It's flat, easy going, and you're never far from the water. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - herons work this stretch regularly, and the reed beds attract warblers in season.

The real advantage of Osier Lake is its location. Ferry Meadows Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just a mile away, so if you're staying put for a few days, this becomes an obvious morning or evening stroll. Nene Outdoors is equally close at 1.4 miles. These aren't high-adrenaline attractions - you won't be here for three hours - but that's the appeal. It's the sort of place where a day includes a gentle walk, a coffee from somewhere in Peterborough, and letting your shoulders drop about three inches.

Free to access, naturally. Go early if you want solitude; midweek beats weekends for that. Worth the detour if you value quiet water and open sky over ticking boxes.
