The ornamental gardens give it more structure than a wild nature reserve; there are planted borders and specimen trees dotted about, so it reads as somewhere someone's actually maintained rather than just left to itself.

Walkers will find the paths manageable and decent for a one to two-hour amble. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - herons, grebes, and various waterfowl use the lake regularly. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main routes, though there's not much in the way of play equipment or facilities, so it's more of a gentle walk than a destination where you'll spend a full day.

The real draw is the contrast with Blackpool itself. If you're staying at Sea View Caravan Park or anywhere along the coast, this gives you a completely different mood without going far. Early morning visits are best - fewer people, better light on the water, more wildlife active. The gardens are free to access, which sweetens the deal considerably.
