Orchard Hill

The walk up Orchard Hill from Holmrook doesn't take long, but the effort pays off properly. You're looking at maybe forty minutes from the village, and the path winds through woodland before opening onto moorland with real views across the Lake District fells. Nothing dramatic - it's only 355 metres - but that's precisely why it works for a weekend break without the queues you get on Scafell or Helvellyn.

On a clear day you can pick out the bigger peaks from here. On a grey one - and there will be grey ones - the mist creeps in and transforms the whole walk into something moody and atmospheric. Bring a map. The paths aren't waymarked brilliantly.

Walkers after a proper half-day excursion will find it satisfying. Families with younger kids can make a pleasant morning of it without anyone complaining their legs have fallen off. The moorland terrain is rough underfoot but never technical. If you're staying at Fisherground Campsite nearby, it's a perfect afternoon mission when the rain's cleared.

I'd say allow two hours return, longer if you want to sit about at the top with a flask. No facilities, no admission charge - just you, the hill, and whatever weather Cumbria decides to throw at you. Worth fitting in if you're exploring the western lakes, though don't rearrange your whole trip for it.
