Oram's Arbour

The moment you push through into Oram's Arbour, you're in woodland that feels properly removed from Winchester, despite being just outside the city. This nature reserve is a patchwork of ancient trees, open glades, and scrubby bits that haven't been manicured into submission - which is exactly what makes it work.

It's a straightforward walk-around job. Paths meander through the reserve, and you'll spot the usual Hampshire woodland residents if you're quiet enough - birds mostly, the odd deer if you're lucky. The trees here are the draw: oaks that look properly old, along with hazel and birch scattered through. There's something calming about the lack of management on display. It doesn't feel like a country estate or a formal park - this is working woodland.

Walkers will get the most from Oram's Arbour. An hour's ramble works well, or you can stretch it to ninety minutes if you're dawdling. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're proper nature spotters. The terrain is manageable, nothing steep.
