Oldland Windmill

The old brick tower stands alone on the Sussex downland just outside Hassocks, a proper remnant of the agricultural life that once defined this landscape. Oldland Windmill is a working windmill - or at least it was - and what strikes you first is how thoroughly isolated it feels despite being nowhere near as remote as it claims to be. The building itself is compact and functional, red brick rising against the South Downs backdrop, nothing decorative about it. Inside (if you manage to catch it open, which involves a bit of detective work) you get a sense of how windmills actually operated, the grinding mechanisms still intact. It's the sort of place that rewards history types and anyone keen on industrial heritage, though kids will spend maybe half an hour here before asking what's next. The windmill doesn't command a full afternoon, but it's an excellent addition to a South Downs walk or a pit stop between Blackberry Wood and The Secret Campsite if you're basing yourself at either. Both are excellent for camping and only a few miles away. The real appeal here is context - understanding how this corner of Sussex functioned a century ago, the labour that went into milling grain before industrial scale took over. Winter visits are better than summer weekends; you'll have the place to yourself and the light sits properly across the brick. Free to view from outside at least, though access to the interior requires checking ahead with local tourism.
