Bedelands Nature Reserve

Just outside Hassocks, Bedelands Nature Reserve sits quietly on the Sussex Weald - the kind of place you'll walk past without realising what you've found unless someone tips you off. It's woodland and open ground in equal measure, proper working habitat rather than a manicured nature trail. Bird watchers come here regularly. So do local dog walkers who know the paths well enough not to need signage.

The reserve itself isn't massive, so don't plan a full day around it. An hour gets you through the main paths comfortably, maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping to identify birds or take photos. The appeal is straightforward - it's genuine countryside five minutes from a small town, and it costs nothing to explore. Families with younger children might find it a bit limited after the first half hour, but serious walkers and anyone who actually enjoys birdsong rather than Instagram backdrops will find it worth the detour.

If you're camping at Southdown Way or Blackberry Wood nearby, this makes an easy morning walk before heading elsewhere. The reserve works better as part of a wider Sussex ramble than as a standalone destination. Combine it with a proper walk across the downs and you've got something. Come early if you're serious about spotting anything - midday turns most wildlife scarce. Bring binoculars if you've got them.
