Oldhall Wood

The walk through Oldhall Wood is exactly what you want from an Essex woodland - proper quiet, with enough of a path to feel safe but rough enough that it doesn't feel manicured to death. Ancient oaks and beech trees make up most of the canopy, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth timing a visit around. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear birds instead of traffic.

This isn't a destination that'll keep you occupied for half a day, to be honest. Most people will get through it in forty minutes to an hour, depending on how slowly you wander and whether you're the type to stop and look at fungi. The woodland is good for stretching legs between the caravan parks clustered around Seawick and St Osyth - it's close enough that families staying at Lee Wick Farm Cottages or Seawick Holiday Park won't waste petrol getting here. It's also the kind of spot older kids might actually engage with rather than moan about, especially if you make it into a bug hunt or bird-spotting thing.

Access appears to be free, which is refreshing. The main thing to know is that the paths can be boggy after rain - wellies aren't a bad shout if you're going in wet weather. No facilities to speak of, so don't expect a cafe or loos. It works best as part of a longer day exploring the area rather than a standalone trip, but as a proper bit of breathing space in the Essex coast holiday rhythm, it does the job.
