Cudmore Grove Country Park

The old estate mansion at Cudmore Grove sits at the heart of what's become one of Essex's better country parks, all sprawling woodland and open grassland that feels properly removed from the coast just across the way. You're looking at roughly 70 acres to wander through, with the house itself - a Victorian pile with serious bones - standing as the focal point, though honestly the grounds are the real draw here. Families do well out of it: there's space for the kids to run about without anyone fretting, a decent walk to be had through the trees, and enough open meadow to justify bringing a picnic. The woodland paths take a proper hour or so depending on pace, winding through some genuinely lovely old trees. It's the sort of place where you can lose a good morning without thinking about it.

Worth the visit depends on what else is pulling you toward Mersea Island way - if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Mersea Island Holiday Park or Parkdean Resorts Coopers Beach, it's absolutely worth a half-day detour.
