Cockaynes Wood

Ancient woodland in Essex that's been around long enough to matter - Cockaynes Wood offers a proper escape from the caravan parks clustered around Mersea Island. This isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres and gift shops. It's a working woodland where you can actually walk without feeling herded.

The wood itself is the draw. Mature trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you bothered leaving the caravan in the first place. It's the sort of place where you might spot woodland birds if you're lucky, or at minimum get away from the seaside crowds that descend on nearby holiday parks like Haven Orchards Village and Ardleigh Caravan & Camping Park.

Walkers will get the most from it - nothing strenuous, but proper woodland rambling rather than a quick loop. Family groups with restless kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely interested in trees and birdsong. History types will appreciate that this is likely old woodland, possibly ancient by English standards, though the site itself doesn't trumpet heritage information at you.

Timing-wise, allow an hour minimum if you're actually going to walk it properly. Spring and autumn beat summer for visibility through the canopy. It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day break if you're staying at any of the parks within five miles - think of it as breathing room between beach days and campfire nights. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't expect facilities or signage that holds your hand.
