Oldbury Wood

The woodland around Oldbury Wood, just outside Sevenoaks, isn't a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and gift shops. It's proper forest - the kind where you actually feel like you've left the commuter belt behind, even though you're barely ten minutes from town.

You'll find a genuine mix of ancient and semi-natural woodland here, with enough established paths to make walking straightforward without feeling too managed. The canopy's thick enough to keep things cool even on warm days, and the ground cover changes with the seasons - carpets of bluebells in spring, proper muddy going in winter. It's the sort of place where a couple of hours evaporates without you noticing.

Historically minded walkers will appreciate that this landscape has genuine age to it. The woodland structure itself tells a story if you know where to look, though don't expect plaques or interpretation boards explaining everything.

Families with kids who can handle uneven terrain and don't need constant entertainment will get something from it. Toddlers might struggle with the terrain, and the absence of facilities means you need to be self-sufficient. Serious walkers doing circuits between Thriftwood Country Park or Gatehouse Wood Country Park nearby will find it a worthwhile addition rather than a destination in itself.

Go early on a weekday if you can manage it. The car park fills up on weekends with the Sevenoaks crowd looking for a quick escape. No fees that I'm aware of, no time limit - just turn up and walk.
