Old Woodstock Line Nature Reserve

The Old Woodstock Line cuts through Oxfordshire like a ribbon of wild space where trains once ran. It's a converted railway line - the kind of place that feels properly peaceful once you're five minutes in, even though Kidlington sits just down the road. The walk follows the old track bed with woodland either side, and depending on the season, you'll spot woodpeckers, tawny owls, and the occasional muntjac deer that'll startle you half to death.

Walkers will get the most out of this reserve. It's dead straightforward - no navigation stress, no steep bits, just a gentle amble with decent wildlife spotting. Families with older kids (eight plus) do well here; younger ones might find the novelty of "walking on a old train line" enough to keep them going for an hour or so, but don't expect dramatic views or a visitor centre. There's none of that.

The reserve sits nicely within reach of the holiday parks clustered around Kidlington and beyond - Greenhill Leisure Park is barely over two miles away, which makes it ideal for a morning walk before heading off to explore Oxford proper or the Cotswolds. Weston Caravan and Campsite and Cotswold View both sit five to six miles out, so still manageable for keen walkers. Go early or late to dodge any dog walkers and school groups. Spring's magic here - that's when the bluebells come through and the bird chorus is properly loud. Free access and no faffing about with opening times makes it brilliant for a casual outing.
