The ruins of Old Walmer Court sit quietly on the outskirts of Deal, a jumble of medieval stonework that most visitors drive straight past without noticing. What remains is the fragmentary core of a 13th-century fortified manor house - not the sort of place that dominates a day out, but absolutely worth a twenty-minute detour if you're camping nearby or walking the coastal path.

You're essentially looking at what survived when Henry VIII's fortifications took priority and local defences became redundant. The stonework is genuine and atmospheric, with enough height to give you a real sense of scale, though you'll need to use your imagination to picture the full structure. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no queue - just the ruins themselves and whatever story you bring to them. History enthusiasts will get something from it; young children will lose interest quickly unless you've got a good line in medieval siege warfare anecdotes.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though opening hours are unclear - it's the sort of site you visit on foot from nearby walks rather than planning a dedicated trip. Allow thirty minutes maximum, including time to poke around the perimeter and take photos. If you're based at Kingsdown Camping or Hawthorn Farm Holiday Park, it's close enough for an easy morning stroll before heading into Deal proper. On a fine day, the sea views from the site are reason enough to make the walk.
