Old Springs Plantation

The forest here feels older than it should for northern England - tall conifers block out half the sky, and the ground beneath your feet is thick with decades of fallen needles. Old Springs Plantation stretches across enough woodland that you can genuinely lose an hour wandering without seeing another soul, which is precisely the point of coming.

It's a working forest, so don't expect manicured trails or interpretive boards explaining everything. What you get instead is the real thing: proper woodland walking with streams cutting through, mossy banks, and the occasional clearing where light floods in. The paths are muddy when wet (which in Cumbria means most of the time), and they're not always obvious, so bring a map or a phone with offline navigation.

Walkers will find this worthwhile, especially if you're basing yourself at The Ashes Caravan Park just down the road near Kendal. It's the kind of place that rewards an afternoon rather than a quick stroll - bring the dog, get the boots muddy, forget about time. Kids might enjoy it if they're the type to build dens rather than demand playgrounds, but there's nothing here to keep younger children entertained for long.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though facilities are minimal. Allow two to three hours if you want to properly explore. Go in autumn when the light slants through differently, or after rain when everything smells properly alive. It's not Instagram-ready, but that's exactly why it's worth the detour.
