Old Site of Clavel Tower

The ruins of Clavel Tower sit on a remote stretch of Dorset heath, about three miles south of Wareham, and honestly, they're worth the trek if you're the sort who gets excited about 19th-century folly architecture. Built in 1830 by a local landowner called Paul Pinney, it was meant to be a lookout tower - all three storeys of it, rising from the windswept landscape like something from a Gothic novel. What you find now is the substantial stone shell of the structure, enough to make out the original design and scramble around the base, though the interior is off-limits for safety reasons.

This isn't a site for rushing through. It's genuinely atmospheric, particularly on overcast days when the wind picks up off the heathland. History types will find it fascinating - there's real archaeological significance here, and the location itself tells you something about Dorset's coastal defense thinking in the Georgian era. Walkers benefit most, since reaching it means a proper countryside ramble from Wareham rather than a five-minute car park stroll. Children might find it interesting for ten minutes, but there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no facilities whatsoever - it's basically you, the stones, and the heath.

It's free to visit and always accessible, though the path can be boggy after rain. Allow an hour or so for the walk and a proper look around. If you're camped at Norden Farm or Woodyhyde, both within easy reach, this makes a natural afternoon excursion - combine it with walks across the wider heathland and you've got a decent half-day sorted.
