Tyneham

Tyneham is a village frozen in time - literally. During World War II, residents were evacuated to make way for military training, and the place was never truly resettled. Today you can wander through abandoned cottages, a church, and a schoolhouse, all preserved as they were left decades ago. It's an eerie, affecting experience that hits differently than a conventional museum.

You're essentially exploring a 1940s snapshot. Peeling wallpaper, old furniture, schoolroom desks - the details are what get you. There's a small visitor centre with information about what life was actually like before the evacuation. Entry is free, and you'll want a good two hours to properly poke around without rushing. Some find it deeply moving; others find it a bit bleak. It's certainly not a day-out-with-the-kids-for-laughs sort of place, though school groups do visit.

The village sits within a military range near Wareham, so access depends on firing schedules - check before you go, as it's not open every day. The surrounding landscape is proper Purbeck: rolling hills, coastal views, and genuinely nice walking country.

If you're camping at West Holme Glamping or Luckford Wood near Wareham, Tyneham makes a worthwhile half-day expedition. Pair it with a walk along the Dorset coast, or explore Wareham itself. It won't suit everyone - some visitors find the atmosphere too unsettling - but if you're interested in social history or World War II, it's worth the drive.
