Old Russia Reservoir

The reservoir sits dark and still, hemmed in by moorland that shifts from green to purple depending on the light. Walkers get the most from this spot. The circuit around the water is straightforward enough, maybe 45 minutes at an easy pace, and you'll encounter far fewer people than you'd find at the popular lakes further north. The moorland sides have that characterful bleakness that appeals to those who find overcrowded beauty spots a bit much.

It's free access, which helps. No visitor centres, no car parks with facilities - just pull up nearby and go. The best light is late afternoon when the moors get that amber glow. Winter walks are particularly good here; the bareness suits the landscape rather than diminishing it.

From Bury, it's a straightforward drive out towards the hills. If you're staying at Dearden Wood - the caravan park about 4.5 miles away - this makes an excellent half-day excursion without joining the queues at better-known beauty spots. Bring proper boots though; the paths get boggy and muddy without warning. It's not dramatic, but it's the sort of place that sits with you.
