Old Road Green

Old Road Green is a proper little nature reserve just outside Stafford - the sort of place you'd walk past without noticing if someone didn't tell you it was worth a stop. But it is. The reserve sits on what was once industrial land, and that's actually what makes it interesting. You get a mix of woodland, grassland, and open water that's become a genuine draw for birds and insects. Nothing flashy, no visitor centre or cafe, just a decent walking route through quietly reclaimed countryside.

Birdwatchers will find their time well spent here, particularly during spring migration when things get properly lively. The ponds attract dragonflies and damselflies in summer, and in autumn the trees put on a solid show. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong without a crowd of people talking over it.

The walk takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and how many birds distract you. It's manageable for families with older kids, though the paths can be muddy after rain - nothing steep or tricky, just bog-standard countryside walking. Bring binoculars if you've got them.
