Old Parrock Hill

The walk up Old Parrock Hill from Ulverston takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Furness Peninsula and out towards Morecambe Bay. It's not a mountain - more of a local fell really - but that's precisely why it works so well for a half-day outing without needing technical gear or serious fitness.

The summit itself is modest, just a cairn and some open moorland, but on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District hills. The route is straightforward enough, mostly following farm tracks and fell paths, though it can get boggy in patches depending on weather. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you want to linger at the top with a flask and a sandwich.

Families with older kids will find it manageable - the gradient isn't punishing and there's something satisfying about topping out on a proper fell, even a small one. Younger children might find it a bit long unless they're keen walkers already. The real bonus is how close it sits to the holiday parks around Newby Bridge and Park Cliffe - you could easily combine this with a caravan break in the area without needing to venture all the way into the Lake District proper.

Ulverston itself is just down the road, a genuine market town with proper pubs and chip shops, so this works well as a morning walk followed by lunch somewhere decent. Free to visit, naturally. Go early in the day if you want to avoid crowds on decent weekends.
