Old Lodge Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Old Lodge Wood sits just outside Preston and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Lancashire forest - ancient trees, decent paths, and genuine quiet. The wood is old enough that you'll spot gnarled oaks and the kind of undergrowth that suggests nobody's been fiddling with it too much. Paths wind through without being sign-posted to death, which is either brilliant or slightly confusing depending on how you feel about maps.

It's the sort of place walkers will spend a solid hour in without feeling rushed. Families with younger kids might get restless after thirty minutes unless you're the type who stops to examine every moss-covered log. The woodland floor is uneven in places and can get properly muddy after rain, so decent boots aren't optional.

Free to access and no closing time nonsense - you can wander whenever suits you. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter, and the light through the canopy is worth timing for if you're bothered about photos.

If you're camping at North View or Moss Rose, both within an easy drive, this makes a good leg-stretcher between park activities. It won't knock your socks off, but it's genuine woodland without the visitor centre crowds. Pop in on your way to or from Preston proper if you need a break from the usual park routine.
