Old John's Wood

Ancient woodland stretches across gentle Norfolk hills just east of Norwich, where Old John's Wood offers proper walking territory without the crowds. The mixed deciduous forest feels wonderfully wild, with well-established paths winding between oak, ash and beech that tower overhead in a proper canopy.

Dog walkers will find this spot absolutely ideal - plenty of space to let them off the lead and explore. Families with older children who enjoy a decent ramble will get the most from it, though pushchairs won't manage the uneven terrain. The woodland paths can get muddy after rain, so boots are essential.

What makes this place special is the genuine sense of being somewhere untouched. No visitor centres or interpretation boards - just you and the trees. Bird watchers often spot nuthatches and woodpeckers, while spring brings carpets of bluebells that are well worth timing a visit for.

The wood connects well with several nearby holiday parks, particularly Woodland Holiday Park and Forest Park Caravan Site, both within easy driving distance. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly for morning dog walks or afternoon adventures when you fancy escaping busier Norfolk attractions. Allow at least an hour to do it justice, though you could easily spend half a day exploring if the weather's kind.
