The exposed white cliff faces reveal millions of years of marine deposits, with fossil fragments clearly visible in the chalky walls - ammonites and sea urchins are common finds if you know where to look.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the industrial heritage too. Victorian-era extraction left behind terraced ledges and deep pools that nature has slowly reclaimed. It's proper wild now, with scrubby vegetation colonising the quarry floor and birds nesting in the cliff crevices.

Families should think twice about bringing very young children - the terrain is uneven and some drops are significant. Older kids who enjoy a bit of adventure will love the fossil hunting though. Allow at least an hour to explore properly, and wear sturdy shoes as the chalk can be slippery when damp.
