Ochr Gaer

The forest at Ochr Gaer sits above Conwy town itself, dense and sloping enough that you're genuinely moving uphill the whole way in. It's proper woodland - dark under the canopy in places, with paths that aren't always obvious but are walkable enough if you pay attention to where boots have worn the earth smooth.

What you're actually doing here is walking through managed forestry with views that open up toward the Conwy valley and the castle town below. The appeal is less about a destination and more about the escape - an hour or so of proper forest air without needing to drive anywhere. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're keen on scrambling over logs and spotting birds. Walkers and anyone after genuine woodland without the crowds will find it worthwhile, especially if you're staying nearby.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though the forest service doesn't publicise it heavily. Go early or late to avoid the school runs from Conwy itself. Spring brings bluebells through the darker patches, which lifts it from functional to genuinely pleasant.

If you're based at Maenan Abbey Caravan Park just outside town, this is an easy morning walk before exploring Conwy castle and the high street. It's not a replacement for the bigger North Wales walks up to the Snowdonia peaks, but it's a solid local option when weather or time is tight.
