Observatory Hill

The walk up Observatory Hill rewards you with one of the best views across Durham and the surrounding countryside. The actual observatory building sits at the summit, though access to it varies depending on the season and what's happening that day. Most people come for the vista rather than to peer through a telescope, and fair enough - on a clear day you can see for miles across County Durham's rolling landscape.

This is ideal for walkers and anyone who enjoys a brisk leg-stretch with a payoff. Kids will manage it fine if they're reasonably fit, though the gradient might frustrate younger ones halfway up. Allow around an hour to get up and back down at a leisurely pace, longer if you want to linger at the top and actually take in the views instead of just snapping a photo.

Being so close to Durham itself - barely three kilometres from the city centre - it makes a sensible stop if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Durham Grange or Grove Farm.
