Oaks Wood

Walk into Oaks Wood and you've stepped into proper old-growth forest - the sort of place where the canopy is thick enough that even mid-summer feels cool and shadowy. Near Kendal, this woodland sits quietly away from the main tourist drag, which means you might actually hear birdsong instead of ice-cream vans.

It's a straightforward walk through mixed woodland with decent paths, nothing technical but enough terrain to keep it interesting. The trees are genuinely impressive - oak, naturally, but also beech and pine packed in tight. You're looking at maybe an hour to ninety minutes depending on pace and whether you stop to sit on the moss-covered logs that dot the place.

Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers would - there's not a lot of open space to let young ones loose, and the shade means it can feel a bit gloomy in winter. But for anyone who walks regularly and likes old woodland rather than manicured forest paths, it's worth the detour from Kendal.
