Oakley Hill

The chalky slopes of Oakley Hill rise above High Wycombe like a proper old-school nature reserve should - all wind-bitten grasses, wildflowers in season, and the kind of views that make you understand why the Chilterns matter. Run by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, this isn't a manicured country park. It's working land where the plants and creatures come first.

You'll find yourself on open downland walks with decent sightlines across the surrounding valleys. In spring and early summer the place explodes with colour - orchids, vetches, and whatever else thrives on thin chalk soil. Butterflies and birds are the real draw here, especially if you're the sort who carries binoculars and actually uses them. The network of paths is straightforward without being boring, and you can knock it out in an hour or so, or linger half a day if the light's good.

This works brilliantly alongside a camping trip from Home Farm (barely two miles away) or Bella Vista if you want to anchor yourself near High Wycombe for a few days. It's the kind of reserve that rewards walkers and naturalists far more than casual visitors after a quick stroll. Families with older kids who can manage uneven ground will do fine; toddlers and prams are another matter entirely. The reserve is free to access - it's managed land, not a ticketed attraction - though a donation to the Trust goes down well. Best visited outside peak summer when the crowds thin and the dawn chorus is still decent.
