Oakedge Hall

Grass-covered earthworks mark the spot where a medieval manor house once stood, just outside Rugeley in the heart of Cannock Chase country. Oakedge Hall's remains tell the story of a grand residence that dominated this landscape for centuries before falling into ruin.

Walking around the site, you can still make out the distinctive raised platforms and ditches that formed the hall's foundations. The layout becomes clearer as you explore - here's where the great hall stood, there the outer courtyard walls. It's not the most dramatic ruin you'll ever see, but history buffs will appreciate piecing together how medieval gentry lived in this corner of Staffordshire.

Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are particularly keen on archaeology. There's not much to actually touch or climb, and no interpretation boards that I could spot. Better suited to adults who enjoy a contemplative wander and don't need everything spelled out for them.

The site works well as part of a longer walk through the surrounding countryside, and it's handy for those staying at the various holiday parks scattered around this area - Silver Trees and Chase Camping are both within a couple of miles. Allow about thirty minutes unless you're making detailed notes, and any time of year will do since there's no shelter to worry about.
