Oak Meadow Nature Reserve

The Essex countryside around Braintree can feel a bit samey if you're not careful, but Oak Meadow Nature Reserve actually gives you a reason to lace up your walking boots. It's a proper working wetland - the sort of place where you might spot a kingfisher if you're patient enough, or at least hear the marsh birds doing their thing across the water meadows.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing technical, but you'll need a decent pair of boots if it's been wet - the ground doesn't dry quickly round here. Allow an hour or so for a gentle circuit, longer if you're serious about your birdwatching. The reserve is free to access, and there's no faffing about with opening hours; you turn up when it suits you.

It's worth the detour if you're camping locally. Stocks Farm Camping is practically on your doorstep at just a fifth of a mile away, and Golden Grove Caravan Park sits comfortably close by too. Both are top-rated spots, so you can base yourselves there and treat Oak Meadow as your morning walk before breakfast. Gosfield Lake Resort, a bit further out, also makes a decent staging post if you're doing a wider tour of the area.

Honestly, it won't blow your mind. But on a clear morning with the light hitting the water right, it's the kind of quiet corner that reminds you why you came to Essex in the first place rather than staying in the garden.
