Oak Copse

Oak Copse is a proper woodland walk just outside Swindon - the kind of place you drive past a hundred times before realising there's actually something worth stopping for. It's not massive, and that's rather the point. The woodland itself is mature oak, which means decent shade even in summer and a real sense of being away from things despite being minutes from the town.

You'll find yourself on well-trodden paths that loop through the trees. It's ideal for families after a quick woodland stretch without committing to a full-day hike, and walkers will appreciate the quietness and the changing light through the canopy. The ground can get muddy after rain - bring decent boots if you're planning to explore properly.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so go in with realistic expectations. An hour is plenty to explore it thoroughly, though you could easily do thirty minutes if you're just after a leg-stretch between other activities. It costs nothing and there are no opening hours restrictions to worry about.

If you're staying at Great Farm or Second Chance Touring & Residential Park nearby, this makes a natural morning outing before heading elsewhere. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's the sort of stop that reminds you why you came to Gloucestershire in the first place - a genuine bit of countryside that hasn't been packaged up for tourists.
