O H P St Hildas Priory

The ruins of St Hilda's Priory sit on the cliffs east of Whitby, commanding views across the North Sea that'll make you forget the wind's trying to knock you sideways. Founded in 657 AD, this is where the real Hilda - a Saxon abbess of considerable clout - established what became one of England's most important monasteries before the Vikings had other ideas. What remains now are the haunting stone walls of the church and some scattered foundations, enough to give you the shape of the place without overwhelming the imagination.

It's genuinely moving to stand here and think about the community that thrived for nearly a thousand years. The setting does most of the work - dramatic cliffs, moody sky, the sound of the sea below. You don't need two hours. A good thirty to forty minutes gets you round the ruins properly, read the interpretation boards, and take in the coastal scenery. History enthusiasts will find it more rewarding than casual visitors; families with young kids might get restless unless they're keen on clambering over stones.

The site's free and open year-round, though weather can make it bleak in winter. Whitby itself is just over a mile away, so it works perfectly as a quick morning visit before tackling the town's other attractions.
