Nyanga sculptural art

Contemporary sculpture in the middle of nowhere turns out to be rather brilliant. Nyanga sits just outside Ringwood and showcases work that makes you stop and actually look - none of that bland gallery-white-walls nonsense. The pieces are proper three-dimensional, often monumental, and they force you to walk around them, consider them from different angles. You'll find yourself thinking about form and space in ways that usually require wine and art school pretension to justify.

It's best suited to anyone with a genuine interest in modern sculpture rather than casual browsers looking for an afternoon's entertainment. History buffs won't find much, and young children will lose patience quickly - these aren't interactive installations. Serious art types, however, will get a real kick out of it. Allow at least an hour, longer if you're the kind who sits on benches and stares thoughtfully.

Worth doing, though, especially if you're based at one of the glamping spots or caravan parks dotted around Forest Edge or Oakdene. It's a proper culture stop between lazy mornings by the New Forest and whatever else your holiday entails. The location itself is peaceful, which somehow makes the work land harder.
